Ultra-Rare Porsche 924 Carrera GTR at Auction

One of only 17 examples made and never race

This 1981 Porsche 924 Carrera GTR is a standout example of Stuttgart’s motorsport legacy, one of just 17 customer race cars built at Porsche’s Weissach facility. Developed from the 924 Turbo to prove the front-engine, water-cooled platform’s racing prowess, this GTR showcases Porsche’s engineering excellence. Unlike most of its counterparts, this car reportedly never competed in period racing, making it an extraordinarily preserved piece of Porsche history.

Conceived as the ultimate transaxle Porsche for privateer racers, the Carrera GTR was a direct descendant of the 924 GTP prototypes that performed impressively at the 1980 24 Hours of Le Mans. Weighing just 2,050 pounds and powered by a dry-sump engine producing 375 horsepower, the GTR could exceed 180 mph in race trim. It featured advanced motorsport technology, including a fully adjustable suspension, titanium springs, 917-derived brakes, and BBS center-lock wheels.

This particular GTR, chassis number 72010, was delivered new to Japan and used sparingly throughout its life. Initially stored by the importer, it was later acquired by a private collector who displayed it in a collection and maintained it meticulously. The car reportedly saw occasional runs at Suzuka and Fuji but has no documented racing history. In 2016, it was sold in the UK with just 109 kilometers on the odometer.

Now presented in exceptionally original, unmodified condition, this 924 Carrera GTR has recently undergone a comprehensive fluid service by Porsche North Houston, including a fuel and oil change. Its pristine preservation makes it a rarity among its peers, most of which saw intense competition in events like Le Mans and IMSA.

Offered at Bonhams’ Scottsdale Auction on January 25, 2025, with an estimated $450,000–$550,000, this car represents a unique opportunity to own an untouched example of Porsche’s iconic transaxle racer.
