The Flat Six in the New 718 Cayman GT4 Will Likely Go to Other Porsche Models

Getting the Most Out of the Engine

At the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Porsche GT boss Andreas Preuninger sat down with Car Throttle to discuss the new engine in the 718 Cayman GT4. What he said about it sheds a little more light on the engine as a whole. It also hints at how Porsche plans to use the mill in the future.

First up, if you thought this engine was like the others in the Porsche repertoire, you were wrong. According to Preuninger, 4.0-litre flat-six doesn’t share much with other engines Porsche uses. The engine features a new crankcase, cylinder heads, pistons, crankshaft, and rods. That’s a lot of new stuff.

Preuninger said that the engine is called the 9A2 EVO. He also said that it will likely make its way into other Porsche models. He said it’s a massive undertaking to design a new engine. “To be frank with you, we can use this engine in the future for other models maybe as well,” he said.

That’s not a confirmation that the engine will appear in other cars, but with the effort put in and the hint that the company might use the engine elsewhere, we’d be surprised if it wasn’t. Preuninger was a bit cagey on the topic of if the engine would be used on non-GT Porsches. All he told the publication was, “We have to see.”
