The Porsche 356 quickly found a new home in Southern California among hot rod enthusiasts, after landing in American shores. Their innovative modifications caught Porsche’s attention, leading to the official debut of the 356 Speedster.
Gary Emory, rooted in this culture, became a go-to for rare Porsche parts and bridged the gap between purists and “outlaw” modifiers. His legacy lives on through his son Rod, whose company, Emory Motorsports, continues to produce iconic custom Porsches like the one you see here courtesy of Bring A Trailer.
Originally a 1965 Porsche 356C coupe, this car was transformed by Emory Motorsports into a one-of-a-kind Emory Special cabriolet. Unlike the company’s traditional “Outlaw” builds that retain a factory aesthetic, Emory Specials allow for bespoke modifications, making each car truly unique.
This particular example underwent a transformation from a coupe to an open-roof configuration during the build. Custom touches include inverted decklid louvers, a modified windshield rake angle, removal of bumpers, and the addition of Pre-A-style rolled rocker panels.
The exterior is finished in a captivating Tropical Green Metallic paint, perfectly complemented by a Vine Green leather interior. Upgraded brakes, suspension, and wheels round out the performance package, while custom seats, a MOMO steering wheel, and air conditioning complete the package.
Power comes from a potent 2.6-liter “Outlaw-4” flat-four engine, meticulously built by Emory Motorsports and pushing a thrilling 260 horsepower to the rear wheels through a Type 901 five-speed manual transmission.
Owning an Emory Motorsports creation is a coveted privilege, often requiring years of waiting. This remarkable 1965 Emory Special presents a rare opportunity to bypass the wait and acquire one of the most sought-after Porsches in the enthusiast community.
