Porsche & The Illusion Of Control

Yes, that title is correct, and we’ll explain right away before you get out your torches and pitchforks. You, the driver, do have control of your Porsche by using your feet on the pedals and your hands on the steering wheel and the shift paddles (or shift knob if manual). You are in control in that sense, as you are the bio-computer that is giving the car all the inputs it needs to function. But, are you really controlling the car itself?

We came about this line of discussion between Stuttcars writers from a review that was done on Top Gear many years ago, where Jeremy Clarkson took a Type 997 911 Turbo out on a drive. During that segment of the show, he stated how he felt like he was driving a line through the laws of physics, that the Porsche traction and stability systems didn’t allow any kind of over- or under-steer.
