In August 1987, Porsche launched the Carrera Club Sport (option M637, or ‘CS’), specifically designed for club racing. The CS featured a blueprinted engine with hollow inlet valves and a higher rev limit, along with track-focused suspension modifications. However, the primary focus was on weight reduction, which can be as effective in improving lap times as increasing engine power.
To achieve this, Porsche removed all powered options and omitted several features, including the sunroof, radio, air conditioning, rear seats, under-sealing, sound insulation, rear wiper, door pocket lids, fog lamps, and even the ‘Carrera’ logo on the engine cover.
A few Club Sports, however, had sunroof and air conditioning reinstated by request. These deletions resulted in a weight reduction of about 70kg (154lb). The 3.2-liter air-cooled flat-six engine remained rated at 231bhp, though original Club Sport engines have been known to produce over 240bhp.
