Porsche 959 - The Full Story & Timeline

The history, updates and story behind the Porsche 959.

Porsche 959 Model Guides - Komfort Vs Sport

There were two main Porsche 959 models. The 959 Komfort is the core model that was sold, while the Porsche 959 S or "959 Sport" came with larger turbos that increased power output to 508 hp and higher top speed, as well as 100kg in less weight. Much rarer, the 959 Sport had a limited run of only 29 cars. Important to note is that official Porsche 959 production ended after the 1988 model year, but in 1992/1993, Porsche built eight more cars assembled from spare parts from the inventory at the manufacturing site in Zuffenhausen. All eight were "Komfort" versions: four in red and four in silver. These cars featured a newly developed speed-sensitive damper system and were much more expensive than the earlier units.

What makes the Porsche 959 so special?

The Porsche 959 was a technological marvel of the 1980s, featuring twin-turbocharged power, advanced all-wheel drive, lightweight materials, and active aerodynamics. Originally developed for Group B rally racing, it became the world’s fastest production car (197 mph) when released in 1986 and set the standard for future supercars.

How fast is the Porsche 959?

At launch, the 959 was the fastest production car in the world, beating Ferrari’s 288 GTO and setting a benchmark for the modern hypercar era. It was so good that Ferrari rushed the F40 to production.

Performance Specs:

0-60 mph: 3.6 seconds (Sport model: 3.2 sec)

0-100 mph: 8.2 seconds

Top Speed: 197 mph (Standard), 211 mph (Sport model)

How many Porsche 959s were made?

In total, 337 Porsche 959s were officially built, making it one of Porsche’s rarest supercars.

7 Pre-Production Prototypes

1 Factory-Built 959 Cabriolet (One-Off Car)

Why was the Porsche 959 illegal in the U.S. for so long?

The 959 was never sold in the U.S. because Porsche did not submit the car for DOT crash testing and emissions certification, making it impossible to register under standard regulations. The "Show and Display" law, passed in 1999, finally allowed enthusiasts like Bill Gates and Paul Allen to legally import federalized Porsche 959s under special conditions.

How much does a Porsche 959 cost today?

The 959 continues to appreciate as one of the most collectible Porsche supercars ever built.

Current Market Prices:

Standard Porsche 959: $1.5M – $2.5M+

Well-preserved or low-mileage cars fetch premium prices, especially with factory-original parts and service records.

What engine does the Porsche 959 have?

The Porsche 959 is powered by a 2.85L twin-turbocharged flat-six engine, derived from Porsche’s Le Mans-winning 956 and 962 race cars. The 959’s race-derived flat-six was the first twin-turbocharged Porsche road car engine, influencing future models like the 911 Turbo (993, 996, 997, and beyond).

Engine Specs:

Horsepower: 450 hp (Standard), 515 hp (Sport Model)

Torque: 369 lb-ft

Redline: 7,800 rpm

Sequential Twin-Turbo System – Reduces lag and delivers progressive power

Was the Porsche 959 a race car?

Yes! The Porsche 959 was originally designed for Group B rally racing, but after the class was canceled, it still saw competition success: 1986 Paris-Dakar Rally Winner – The 959 took 1st and 2nd place in the grueling off-road event. 🏁 1986 24 Hours of Le Mans (961 Race Version) – A modified 959 (Porsche 961) finished 7th overall. Although it was never raced in Group B, its dominance in Dakar and Le Mans solidified its motorsport legend status.

The Porsche 959 Sport (S) was a lighter, more powerful version of the standard 959.

Key Differences:

Increased Power – 515 hp vs. 450 hp (Standard Model)

Higher Top Speed – 211 mph vs. 197 mph

With only 29 Sport models built, they are extremely rare and significantly more valuable.

What is the Porsche 959 Komfort?

The Porsche 959 Komfort is the most common production variant of the 959. Most 959s were built as Komfort models, making them the preferred choice for collectors who value usability.

It featured:
