Making More Power Than Claimed
Toyota doesn’t appear to be the only company understating the power of its sports cars. Recently, MotorTrend did a dyno test of the Porsche 911 Carrera S and found that the car is making different power numbers than the company states in its literature. By factoring in the powertrain, you’ll see that the power output for the car’s engine is likely higher than Porsche says it is.
What the Numbers Look Like
Porsche claims that the car’s 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six engine makes 443 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. That’s a good amount of power, but Motor Trend found the car made 414 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. When you think that the engine’s power is filtered through the car’s drivetrain, the actual numbers for the engine are likely higher. According to the publication, you can expect the numbers at the engine’s crank to be around 487 hp and 478 lb-ft of torque.
While this information is interesting and not at all bad, it does bring to question the truthfulness of Porsche’s other vehicles power claims. Are they underrated as well? Porsche has some higher-powered variants upcoming. It will be interesting to see where their power numbers fall and how all of that translates in the real world when publications and customers start testing them on the dyno.
