The popularity of a road car often skyrockets when it’s adapted for racing, as seen with the Porsche 944. While the 944 enjoyed success during its nine-year production, it doesn’t hold the same reverence as the 911s of its era. However, in its transformed state as the 944 GTR, it earned a distinct place in motorsport history.
Dressed in the iconic red and yellow Electrodyne livery, this IMSA series competitor of the late 1980s showcased bold engineering by Fabcar Engineering. They constructed just seven GTRs, each featuring a custom tube chassis and a heavily modified 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-four engine, enhanced with a 962-derived motronic ECU. Built to challenge Corvettes and Camaros in the GTO class, it competed at legendary tracks like Daytona in 1987, albeit with mixed results.
This is the kind of car that you’ll also love to see and hear in action, just like in this video from Goodwood Road & Racing featuring a Porsche 944 GTR roaring around Laguna Seca.
