The Porsche Carrera Cup GB rolled into Silverstone for the penultimate meeting of the season. The Free Practice sessions on Friday were run in damp and slippery conditions. However, John McCullagh made the most of it around the National circuit and was able to take many positives through to qualifying on Saturday. Ultimately, he qualified 17th for Race 1 and 16th for Race 2. The weather forecast for the entire weekend was less than ideal and McCullagh had a challenge on his hands on a cold and damp track.
Come race day and the crowds were streaming into Silverstone for the early race at 09:40am and the entire grid was buzzing with excitement to get the racing underway.
From the rolling start, McCullagh struggled for traction, which bunched up the chasers behind him. As the race wore on, McCullagh managed to distance himself from the ProAm2 drivers and moved up two places from his starting position to finish 15th overall and a respectable fourth in class.
Race 2 in the afternoon was an altogether different affair as McCullagh managed to get good drive from the standing start to keep pace with his rivals in front of him. He was in the groove and picked off two places by the halfway stage of the race, moving up into 14th position in what was proving to be a hugely entertaining race. Into the closing stages, McCullagh seized his opportunity to move into a podium position in ProAm1 by passing Graeme Mundy. He held on for the remaining few laps and finished 13th overall and third in ProAm1 to gain more valuable points for Team Redline Racing.
Next up is Brands Hatch in two week’s time, where McCullagh will be looking for a strong finish to the season before preparations for a full season in 2018 get underway. Written by: Ian Tonkin Images by: Porsche Motorsport
