This rare Porsche 911 Type 964 variant, the Carrera RS 3.8 which is currently offered for sale on Bring A Trailer, was produced in very limited numbers, with only 55 units built towards the end of the 964’s production.
Based on the Carrera Cup race car, the RS 3.8 featured a larger 3.8-liter engine with 300bhp, compared to the standard 3.6-liter 964 engine. It came with a wide, Turbo-style body and a distinctive fixed bi-plane rear wing adorned with the “3.8” logo. Porsche designed the RS 3.8 with weight-saving in mind. Aluminum replaced steel for the front lid and doors, the windows were thinner, and many interior components, such as power seats and sound insulation, were stripped out or replaced with lighter alternatives.
The result was a car 600 lbs lighter than the standard Carrera 2, although some owners opted to keep certain comforts for daily use. Transmission upgrades included shorter gears and a limited-slip differential, giving the RS 3.8 excellent acceleration and road performance. This model could reach almost 170 mph, making it a highly sought-after, near race-ready road car.
Only 55 Porsche 964 911 Carrera RS 3.8s were produced for a single model year, with around 12 of them destined for the Japanese market, including this beautiful example originally owned by well-known collector Shin Okamoto, until it was imported to the U.S. in the late 2010s. It was later acquired by WhatsApp founder Jan Koum and eventually became part of the Garage26 collection in Miami before being acquired by the current owner.
Finished in striking Speed Yellow, this 1993 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.8 features an aluminum front trunk lid and doors, along with the model’s signature adjustable rear wing. It rides on 18″ Speedline wheels and is equipped with anti-lock disc brakes, Bilstein adjustable coilovers, and a front strut brace. The interior features fixed-back Recaro bucket seats in black and gray leather, lightweight door panels, a Clubsport steering wheel, and yellow seatbelts.
Powered by a 3.8-liter M64/04 flat-six engine producing 300 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque, it is mated to a G50/10 five-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential. This Carrera RS 3.8 offers a rare opportunity to own a limited-edition, air-cooled Type 964 from Porsche’s second generation.
