Production of the $845,000 plug-in hybrid car was limited to 918 units to maintain exclusivity. The last car was spoken for in December 2014. U.S. customers bought 297 Spyders, with Germany and China collecting about 100 each and the rest went to various markets around the globe. The asking price for a 918 on the used market is now double the original list price.

Launched in late 2013, the 918 uses two electric motors to bolster its 4.6-litre racing-inspired V8. In pure electric mode, its 129-horsepower and 156-hp electric motors on its front and rear axles accelerate the 1,634-kilogram supercar to 100 kilometres an hour in 6.2 seconds.

But in total, 887 horsepower is available, able to rocket the 918 to 100 km/h in about 2.6 seconds on its way to 300 km/h in under 18 seconds. Porsche says the technology developed for the 918 will find its way into many of its other cars.

Note that all Porsche 918 Spyders are 2015 model year cars, even though they were produced between 2013 and 2015.
