Could Lotus Be Planning a Porsche Boxster-Rivaling Elan Revival?

It Sounds Like It

Lotus has long been held up as one of the best sports car manufacturers out there. The company builds excellent cars, one that went away a while back but was a staple in the sports car market was the Elan. According to Autocar, Lotus may be planning to bring back the Elan name in a drop-top sports car.

And what will that car target as competition? You guessed it, the Porsche Boxster. The Boxster is one of the best drop-top sports cars out there, so that’s a pretty tall order, though, we think Lotus could pull it off. This would be the first Elan since the model was discontinued in 1995.

The Elan would use the new platform that Lotus is currently building. This is a different platform than the one that the Elise, Exige, and Evora all currently use. Most of the details about this car are up in the air still, but the new model should use a unique rivet-bonded composite structure that’s extremely lightweight.

It’ll be interesting to see what Lotus comes up with. There was an Elan concept back in 2014, according to CarBuzz, but that project never made it to production. We’d imagine this new car will be pretty different from that one.
