CarWow conducted a drag race between the BMW M4 CS and the new Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS (992.2 hybrid) to determine which high-performance machine comes out on top.
Looking at the specifications, the Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS features a 3.6-liter turbocharged flat-six with hybrid assistance, producing 541 horsepower and 610 Nm of torque. It sends power to all four wheels through an 8-speed PDK transmission and weighs 1,645 kg. On the other hand, the BMW M4 CS is equipped with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six, generating 550 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque. Also utilizing an all-wheel-drive system, it is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and weighs 1,760 kg.
In the standing quarter-mile drag race, both cars recorded an identical time of 10.7 seconds, but the Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS won by a small margin, largely due to its superior traction from the rear-engine layout, which helped it launch more effectively. The BMW M4 CS remained highly competitive, staying close throughout but ultimately falling just short in acceleration from a standstill.
In the rolling races, results varied based on conditions. When accelerating from 50 mph in Normal mode, the BMW M4 CS took the win, as the Porsche’s hybrid system did not provide an advantage in this scenario. However, when the same test was conducted in Sport mode with manual shifting, the Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS came out ahead, making better use of its hybrid-assisted acceleration.
In a 30 mph roll in fourth gear, the BMW M4 CS pulled ahead, benefitting from its lower gearing despite a slight initial lag. When testing acceleration in top gear (8th gear pull), the Porsche 911 GTS had the advantage, leveraging its hybrid system to deliver stronger performance at higher speeds.
Analyzing the results, the Porsche’s hybrid system plays a significant role in enhancing launch performance and high-speed acceleration but does not necessarily dominate in rolling races. While the Porsche narrowly wins the drag race, the BMW proves its strengths in braking and select rolling conditions. This battle highlights just how fast the new hybrid Porsche 911 GTS is, while also proving that the BMW M4 CS remains a formidable competitor, especially considering its lower price.
