Makellos Classics, a California-based Porsche specialist, has reimagined the 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo, featured in a video from Autotopia LA on YouTube. This pro-touring Resto-Mod refines the original’s performance and usability while staying true to its heritage.
The 930’s turbocharged flat-six engine now features a 3.5L setup with a 964 crankshaft, 98mm pistons, cylinders, electronic fuel injection, and a Garrett 35R turbo. It delivers 406 wheel horsepower (around 465 hp at the crank) and strong low-end torque from 2,000 RPM, minimizing the notorious turbo lag of the “Widowmaker.”
A Ruf five-speed transmission from the Yellowbird era replaces the original four-speed. Suspension upgrades include KW Variant 3 coilovers and Tarret Engineering sway bars, while the original 930 brakes remain. The car’s 2,300–2,500 lb weight ensures a strong power-to-weight ratio, and wide tires (225/50 front, 255/50 rear) paired with tuned suspension eliminate the original’s light front-end issues.
Exterior updates include an IRO-style front bumper, Yellowbird-style rear bumper, RS-inspired ducktail spoiler, and custom Magnus Walker-designed wheels. The interior features tartan-patterned seats, some subtle upgrades, and a Porsche Classic stereo with Apple CarPlay.
