Rare 1993 Porsche 911 Turbo S Lightweight Up for Grabs

One of just 86 examples produced

In May 1992, Porsche introduced a special limited-edition version of the Type 964 Turbo: the ‘Turbo S Leichtbau‘ (Lightweight). Initially planned for 25-50 units, the production run was later increased to approximately 86 cars. This model was designed to be more powerful and significantly lighter than the standard Turbo, improving both performance and handling.

The engine enhancements boosted output by 61 horsepower, bringing the total to 381 horsepower. Porsche achieved this by modifying the camshafts, optimizing the intake ducts, increasing charge pressure, and refining the ignition and fuel injection system. Additionally, the car was lowered by 40 millimeters and given firmer suspension settings for improved road dynamics.

Weight reduction was a key aspect of the Turbo S Leichtbau. Porsche removed under-body protection, soundproofing, air conditioning, power steering, and rear seats. Further savings came from thinner glass, aluminum doors, a carbon-fiber luggage compartment, and lighter carpeting, resulting in a total weight loss of approximately 180 kg (397 pounds) compared to the standard Turbo.

This particular 1993 Porsche 911 Turbo S Lightweight is one of just 86 examples produced. It features a host of performance-focused modifications, including carbon composite panels, seam-welded chassis reinforcements, and distinctive 18-inch Speedline wheels. The 3.3-liter turbocharged flat-six engine, paired with a five-speed Getrag manual transmission, enables a 0-62 mph time of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 180 mph.

Delivered new in July 1992, this car was originally owned by Peter Graf, father of tennis legend Steffi Graf. It later moved to Japan before being acquired by a Swedish collector in 2019. In 2021, the car underwent a comprehensive recommissioning by marque expert Boxer Motor & Klassische Automobile in Germany, costing over $34,400. The restoration included interior reupholstering, brake caliper refurbishment, wheel restoration, and engine tuning.

Finished in its original Polar Silver Metallic over a black leather interior, this example retains its matching-numbers engine and transmission. This rare and historically significant Porsche 911 Turbo S Lightweight will be auctioned by RM Sotheby’s at their Miami event on February 28 with an estimated value of up to $1,000,000.
