Rare 1988 Porsche 959 Sport Up for Auction

One of only 29 Sport examples ever made

Developed in the early 1980s as a Group B rally competitor, the Porsche 959 debuted as a concept at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show. Although the intended racing series was ultimately cancelled, Porsche moved forward with limited production in 1987. Merging advanced racing technology with road-going capability, the 959 remains a benchmark in automotive engineering.

At its core was a 2,849cc twin-turbocharged flat-six engine featuring water-cooled, DOHC four-valve heads, a design refined from Porsche’s Le Mans-winning 936 and 956/962 race cars. Generating 450 horsepower, the lightweight body’s aerodynamic efficiency allowed the car to surpass 195 mph, securing its place among the elite supercars of its era.

The 959 pioneered an advanced all-wheel-drive system with a six-speed transmission featuring computer-controlled torque distribution for varying road conditions. Double wishbone suspension with electronically adjustable ride height, ABS-equipped brakes, and run-flat tire monitoring delivered race-level performance while maintaining Porsche’s signature usability. Luxury features like electric windows, climate control, heated seats, and a high-end stereo made it as comfortable as a grand tourer.

From 1986 to 1988, Porsche produced only 292 examples, most in Komfort trim. However, 29 were built as 959 Sport models, which omitted adaptive suspension, air conditioning, and stereo to reduce weight by 220 pounds. The Sport variant included a full roll cage, four-point harnesses, and cloth upholstery. Buyers could choose between Grand Prix White or Guards Red.

The Porsche 959 Sport is an exceptionally rare sight at auctions, given that only a few of them were made. As one of the most advanced supercars of its time, it holds a special place in Porsche’s history, making it highly desirable among collectors. If you’re seeking the ultimate iteration of the iconic 959, keep an eye on RM Sotheby’s Miami auction in late February, where a 1988 Porsche 959 Sport will be up for grabs with an estimated price range of $5,500,000 to $6,500,000.

This example is number 16 of only 29 959 Sport examples produced. It was originally purchased in June 1989 by Werner Funk of La Jolla, California, directly from Porsche rather than through a dealership. Funk, a former Porsche factory racing team crew chief, had deep ties to the brand. Since the 959 did not meet U.S. regulations, he took delivery in Stuttgart but could not legally import it. Within weeks, he sold the car through Graber Ferrari in Switzerland. Before selling, he enjoyed a memorable track day in France, driving it alongside a Ferrari F40 and 288 GTO.

The car remained in Switzerland for most of its life, receiving meticulous maintenance, including mechanical work in 2008 and continued servicing through 2015. It later moved to Italy and Sweden before returning to Italy and eventually arriving in the U.S., where it resides today. Now showing just 3,757 miles, this exceptionally preserved 959 Sport is a rare collector’s piece. As the ultimate evolution of Porsche’s groundbreaking 1980s supercar, it is an extraordinary opportunity for collectors seeking one of the most advanced and sought-after Porsches ever built.
