FOR SALE: 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring

One of just 1,308 Carrera RS 2.7s built to “M472” Touring specification

RM Sotheby’s is thrilled to offer this rare and stunning 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring. Finished in its original Black with a Leatherette and Corduroy interior, this highly sought-after car will be auctioned on November 2, with an estimated value of $650,000 to $800,000

The Carrera RS debuted in 1972 as a homologation special for Group 3 racing, one of Europe’s most competitive GT categories. Porsche originally planned to produce only 200 units, anticipating limited interest, but demand far exceeded expectations. By the time production ended in 1973, around 1,500 units had been built, cementing the Carrera RS as a landmark in 911 history. This model featured an ultra-lightweight build (900 kg in racing trim), a specially developed 2.7-liter engine, excellent brakes, and highly responsive handling, creating an ideal road and track GT. It was even named the greatest driver’s car by Formula 1 champion John Surtees.

Visually, the RS stood out with its distinctive striping, signature “ducktail” rear spoiler, and flared rear wheel arches for wider tires. Weight reduction measures and improved suspension also contributed to its performance. Buyers could choose between two versions: the competition-focused Lightweight (M471) or the Touring (M472), which offered a more comfortable, fully trimmed interior for those who prioritized luxury.

This particular example, chassis “0990,” is a right-hand-drive, UK-delivered car that left the factory in 1973 in the “M472” Touring specification. Finished in Black with a Leatherette and Corduroy interior, it came with desirable features like a heated rear window, electric sunroof, electric windows, and sports seats for both driver and passenger. It was the 990th Carrera RS 2.7 Touring built and was first registered in May 1973. The car underwent a meticulous, no-expense-spared restoration by Porscha Bodyshop and Prestige Porsche Specialists, bringing it back to factory standards.

After its restoration, the car gained widespread acclaim, winning several awards at concours events, including “1st in Class” and “Best RS Entered.” Well-known within Porsche Club GB, it has participated in numerous events, including the 40th anniversary celebration of the Carrera RS at Hedingham Castle. It remains in its original black color, now sporting the iconic “ducktail” spoiler, and retains its matching-numbers engine.
