The Porsche 911 Type 964 RSR, designed for international GT racing by privateers, represents a significant evolution in the 911 series, first introduced in 1989. Available in two versions, the Carrera 4 and Carrera 2, it marked Porsche’s first use of four-wheel drive in a production model, drawing on technology developed from the 959 supercar.
The 964 series featured extensive mechanical updates, with 87% of parts newly designed. Both models shared a 3.6-liter flat-six engine, with innovations such as power-assisted steering, anti-lock brakes, and a five-speed manual transmission. The Carrera 2 also offered a Tiptronic automatic option, achieving superior performance while meeting emission standards.
In 1992, Porsche launched the lightweight Carrera RS variant, based on the Carrera Cup competition model, for the European market. The RS model’s 3.6-liter engine produced 260bhp, while the later Carrera RS 3.8 increased bore size to 3,746cc and output to 300bhp, featuring a Turbo-style body. The RSR competition version offered 325-350hp, with only around 50 units produced by the end of 1993, including two Strassenversion.
The featured Carrera RSR 3.8, chassis 496090, is exceptionally rare, having never been raced and showing only 39 kilometers (~25 miles). Delivered to its first owner in Germany in December 1993, it later joined a prestigious Japanese collection before being imported to the U.S. and undergoing a $40,000 service to make it road-ready.
Finished in Guards Red and equipped with unique features such as a locking differential, 120-liter fuel tank, ADAC GT-type exhaust, Le Mans gear ratios, air jacks, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a six-point racing harness for the passenger seat, is now titled and registered in Montana.
As a road-legal Porsche with a history tied to FIA Le Mans class victories, it stands as a highly desirable collector’s item, especially notable for its remarkably low mileage. This 1993 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 3.8 will be open for bidding at RM Sotheby’s upcoming Monterey Auction with an estimated value of $1,250,000 to $1,500,000 USD.
