The demise of the FIA World Sportscar Championship in 1992 left a void in international GT racing, but the emergence of the BPR Global GT Endurance Series breathed new life into the sport. Porsche, eager to compete in this revitalized arena, unveiled the GT2, a high-performance racing car based on the newly introduced twin-turbo 993 model.
Alongside 194 road-legal 993 GT2s built for homologation, Porsche created 78 GT2Rs, or Rennversions, derived from the potent Turbo S LM-GT of 1993. Despite its roots in the classic 911 design, the 993 GT2R sported aggressive features like GRP fender flares and a conspicuous front air dam, accompanied by an adjustable rear wing tailored to channel air to its turbocharged engine.
Powering the GT2R was the purpose-built M64/81 engine, equipped with twin K24 turbochargers, larger intercoolers, high-lift camshafts, and an upgraded valve train, managed by a TAGtronic 3.8 ECU. Delivering 450 bhp and 479 lbs./ft. torque, this powerhouse was distinctly rear-wheel drive, unlike its all-wheel-drive Turbo counterpart.
The 993 GT2Rs enjoyed immense success between 1995 and 1998, clinching titles in prestigious championships such as the BPR Global GT Endurance Championship, IMSA Sports Car Championship, SCCA World Challenge, and the German ADAC GT Cup.
Schaltkulisse is proud to offer a 1996 Porsche 993 GT2R believed to be one of only 10 finished in ‘X4’ Speed Yellow. Chassis #393377 was originally sold through Japanese exotic car dealer Art Sports, found its first owner in Seigo Tanabe of Shelby Asia Inc. Under Tanabe’s ownership, the GT2R was never used for competitive racing but was instead used sparingly for private track events. It was then sold to an American collector in 2013, where it joined a prestigious collection.
Now under the ownership of another discerning collector, this GT2R with 5386 km shown on the odometer, continues to be cherished, boasting factory-supplied components and maintaining its show-quality presentation, serving as a testament to Porsche’s racing heritage.
