This 1998 RUF Turbo R Could Be The Ultimate Air-Cooled 911

Starting as a modest service station in Pfaffenhausen, Germany, within a mere three decades, RUF quickly evolved into a hub for creating some of the most exceptional super sports cars in the world. Alois Ruf Junior, inspired by his father’s enterprise, cultivated a profound love for automobiles, especially the Porsche 911. RUF’s first creations were initially based on this iconic model, but over time, as the company expanded, they began utilizing 911 body-in-white chassis to innovate and produced their own models.

Introduced in 1998 by RUF to fill the void left by the discontinuation of their CTR2 supercar, the Turbo R became an emblem of excellence in the company’s lineup. Based on the 993-generation Porsche 911 Turbo. it boasted a bespoke RUF-developed variant of Porsche’s revered 3.6-liter, M64/60 flat-six-cylinder engine.

This powertrain, enhanced with larger twin turbochargers, aggressive camshafts, a custom ECU, and a high-flow exhaust system, generated a remarkable 483 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. Coupled with a six-speed manual transaxle featuring various gear ratios, the Turbo R could surpass 204 miles per hour with the appropriate gear set, achieving 0-60 mph in under 3.5 seconds.

This particular 1998 RUF Turbo R, finished in Grand Prix White over black, could possible be the ultimate air-cooled 911 ever made. A rarity with only 15 examples produced by the Pfaffenhausen factory, distinguished by their “W09” VIN prefix, each unit featured bespoke modifications tailored to the original owner’s preferences.

Notably, this Turbo R boasts integrated enhancements including a leather-wrapped roll cage, Bilstein sports suspension, 19-inch aluminum center-lock wheels, and a carbon ceramic brake package with distinctive Acid Green accents. Its exterior modifications, such as carbon fiber bumpers and fenders, not only enhance aesthetics but also optimize cooling for the engine and brakes. It it also equipped with a RUF-developed six-speed manual transaxle and all-wheel-drive system. Recent upgrades totaling $88,000 have elevated its performance to new heights, boasting a 560-horsepower tune and enhanced turbochargers.

Inside, the cabin exudes luxury with black leather upholstery accented by Acid Green detailing. RUF fittings adorn the interior, including carbon fiber sport seats, billet aluminum pedals, high-contrast gauges, and a new head unit that comes with Bluetooth, CarPlay, and USB capabilities.

This 1998 RUF Turbo R with just 3,276 miles on the clock will be available for bidding on March 1-2, with RM Sotheby’s expecting it to sell for $1,500,000 – $1,800,000.
