Bonhams will auction one of the two existing examples of the Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 3.8-liter “Strassenversion” Coupé on November 25 during its “On The Grid – The Abu Dhabi Auction.”
In 1992, Porsche introduced the 964 Carrera RS, a lightweight variant reminiscent of the legendary 2.7 and 3.0-liter RS and RSR ‘homologation specials’ of the 1970s. Based on the ‘Carrera Cup’ competition model, it was exclusively sold in the European market. The Carrera RS retained the 3.6-liter engine, with an increased maximum output of 260bhp. The subsequent Carrera RS ‘3.8’ featured a larger bore size, bringing the capacity to 3,746cc, and a maximum power of 300bhp. This M64/04 engine was housed in a wider, Turbo-style body, also used for the more powerful and lighter RSR competition version, estimated to have a power output between 325 and 350hp. Approximately 50 of these 3.8-liter RSRs were produced by the end of Type 964 production in December 1993, with only two being Strassenversion.
The RSR offered by Bonhams is exceptionally original and untouched, remaining undriven for 30 years, retaining its factory-applied Cosmoline protective coating. Painted in Polar Silver Metallic, it boasts unique features, including a well-appointed interior with Guards Red leather trim extending to various components. This particular RSR stands out with a Polar Silver/Guards Red color scheme, previously used for two of the VIP owner’s four 3.3 Turbo S Lightweights. Noteworthy features include a passenger seat, center locks, air jacks, locking differential, 120-liter fuel tank, and a Le Mans-specification twin-plug engine.
This one-of-a-kind version of the Porsche 911 Type 964 Carrera RSR is expected to fetch between $2 million and $2.5 million at the auction.
