The 1989 model of Porsche’s 911 Speedster model lineup is arguably one of the most recognizable as the 911 Speedster was the 1st descendant of the esteemed 356 Speedster, which is known to have built the foundation of Porsche’s reputation in the United States, both on the road and on track.
The Speedster features a tonneau cover behind the front seats and also has a more aggressively raked and cut down windshield which is reminiscent of the 356 Speedster which gives it a more sporty appearance compared to the more subdued 911 Cabriolet.
With a wide bodywork from the 930 Turbo minus the ‘whale tail’ spoiler, powering the Speedster is Porsche’s 3.2-liter air-cooled flat six-cylinder engine matched to the G50 five-speed manual gearbox.
Only 2,103 units of the Speedsters were produced and only 802 of those were set to be shipped to the North American market. 442 of the 802 were shipped for California.
RM Sotheby’s is currently offering this 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster example with a Guards Red exterior finish matched with a Black leather interior, which can perhaps be the most iconic color combination for the model. The sale will come with the Speedster’s original service book which shows that in August of 1989, the car was delivered new through Porsche of Inglewood, California. Since then, it has not left the state.
Current owner acquired the example back in 1998 from Fred Jung. At the time Jung had established himself as a renowned and respected Porsche mechanic with operations in San Rafael, just outside of San Francisco.
Current owner and Fred’s son are both Harvard Business School graduates and were well acquainted. It just so happened that Fred’s son was interested in starting a technology business and needed to raise funds, so they opted to sell the Speedster. Having previously shown interest in the Speedster, the current owner was able to acquire the car from Jung.
Though the current owner spends most of his time in Hong Kong, he opted to keep his Speedster in his San Francisco home near the bay area. He normally used it only during the summer months.
When it was purchased from Jung, it had 7,540 miles on the odometer, and as of posting the car has a mileage of barely 11,500 miles from new. He drove it roughly 150 miles per year under current ownership. Since the owner has access to other cars, the Speedster was kept to be used only for special, short journeys to be able to keep its exceptional conditions.
While in possession of the current owner, the car has never had any issues, started immediately and was wonderful to drive, despite having been kept in storage for long periods of time. It is still the current owner’s most favorite car when he wants to go on a leisurely drive, with the top down along the California coast.
It also has a clean Carfax report where its original mileage was confirmed. The sale would also come with the original owner’s manual, tool kit, and some invoices that it has accumulated throughout its life. Well-kept, low mileage examples of the Speedsters are becoming harder and harder to find, and it should also be noted that it will be coming from a long-term ownership.
For this rare, well kept and well preserved Speedster example, the current owner is asking for $220,000.
