The 2024 Porsche 718 Spyder RS is a high-performance convertible variant of the 718 Boxster. It features the same 4.0L naturally aspirated flat-six engine found in the 911 GT3, generating approximately 495 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. This power allows it to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.4 seconds, with a top speed of 191 mph.
The Spyder RS is equipped with additional air intakes, sleek louvres that cover the mid-engine layout, and enhanced downforce compared to the standard model. Its body is constructed using carbon fiber-reinforced plastic to ensure a lightweight design, and the RS chassis has been specifically tuned to improve the engaging handling of this open-top Porsche.
But while the engine screams performance, the rest of the car, particularly the suspension, is a bit more forgiving. Unlike the 718 Cayman GT4 RS, the Spyder’s suspension is softer, more suited to daily driving than constant track use.
This creates an identity crisis of sorts. The RS badge stands for “Rennsport,” or racing sport in German, and it’s usually reserved for Porsche’s most hardcore models. So, is it a race car or a weekend cruiser? This is the question that Thomas and James from Throttle House attempt to answer for us they take the Porsche 718 Spyder RS for a drive!
