2019 Porsche 935

700 BHP at 7,000 RPM Screamer

Unveiled at Porsche’s 70th-anniversary celebration at Rennsport Reunion VI in California in September 2018, the new 935 was a limited-edition, track-only special that paid homage to the original 935 race cars. Achieving remarkable success on racetracks worldwide during the late 1970s, 935s secured victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979 and the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1978 and 1980.

The reimagined 935 was based on the contemporaneous 991.2-generation 911 GT2 RS Clubsport, but featured defining new bodywork that was stated by Porsche to evoke the long-tail 935/78 race car. Affectionately nicknamed “Moby Dick” by fans in reference to Herman Melville’s mythical white whale, an elongated shape, massive fairings, white base color, and prominent rear wing characterized the 935/78.

The better part of the Clubsport’s body was replaced or supplemented by newly developed parts rendered from carbon fiber composite. Appropriated from the Porsche 911 GT3 R, distinctive wheel-arch air vents on the front fairings mimicked that of the original while increasing downforce at the front axle. Measuring almost 75″ across, the new 935’s adjustable rear wing evoked that of its illustrious predecessor while lending aerodynamic balance.

Other exterior details also paid tribute to vehicles from Porsche’s motor racing heritage: the center-lock BBS wheels were reminiscent of the 935/78, while the LED rear lights on the rear-wing end plates were inspired by the contemporary 919 Hybrid LMP1 race car. The side mirrors drew from the more recent Le Mans-winning 911 RSR, while exposed titanium tailpipes were modeled after the 1968 Porsche 908/01.

As also found in the GT2 RS Clubsport, the 935 was powered by a 3.8-liter, water-cooled, twin-turbocharged flat-six. The powerhouse engine featured lightweight construction with titanium componentry and direct fuel injection. Other innovations included a water-spraying system to cool intake air, and variable turbine geometry turbochargers to minimize turbo lag and ensure more linear power delivery. Porsche Stability Management, including traction control, as well as an anti-lock braking system, were standard.

While developing 700 hp at 7,000 rpm, the engine’s 553 lbs./ft. of peak torque is available between 2,500 and 4,000 rpm. A seven-speed, dual-clutch PDK – short for Porsche Doppelkupplung – channeled the power to the rear axle and was operated via shift paddles on the steering wheel. Coupled with the more aerodynamic shape, Porsche claimed the new 935 could achieve 0–60 mph in 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 211 mph.

A testament to its track-oriented design, the 935’s cabin was a spartan, driver-focused affair with controls placed intuitively for easy access. Equipment included a single carbon fiber wraparound Recaro bucket seat with a six-point harness, a multifunction yolk-style carbon steering wheel, a comprehensive roll cage, a roof-mounted escape hatch, and an electrically triggered fire suppression system. A nicety for a track car, the 935 also featured dual-zone air-conditioning. Available as an option, a second seat allowed drivers to share their track experience with a passenger.

Coming to market

Number 76 out of a production run of a mere 77 that were offered only to Porsche’s VIP customers, this 935 wears an optional factory-applied gray paint-protection wrap with the iconic Martini livery, and was ordered with a $44,300 spare-parts package comprised of an extra front spoiler, rear body paneling, two sets of additional wheels, and brake components. Other items accompanying the sale include purchase documentation, a binder of technical information, and additional spares including a Recaro seat.

Maintained as part of an extensive Porsche collection since it was delivered by Porsche Motorsport in August 2019, this 935 indicates only delivery mileage at the time of cataloguing, and remains very much in pristine, as-supplied condition. With such limited production, the availability of this Martini-liveried 935 presents an exceptional opportunity to join a very exclusive driver’s club.
