Bonhams is scheduled to auction a 1988 Porsche 959 Komfort formerly owned by ex-Formula 1 driver Eddie Irvine. This 959 will be available for bidding on Bonhams’ Miami auction this coming May 4 and is valued at $1,750,000 – US$2,000,000 USD.
Porsche’s groundbreaking Type 959 is the company’s first supercar. It emerged as the world’s fastest and most advanced road car of its era, boasting a plethora of cutting-edge features that pushed the boundaries of automotive engineering.
Featuring a technologically advanced powertrain derived from Porsche’s dominant 956/962 prototypes, the 959 showcased a composite body and lightweight chassis, adjustable ride height, expansive ABS brakes, run-flat tires, and an array of drive modes.
Despite the FIA’s cancellation of Group B, Porsche persisted with the 959 project, eventually producing 292 units, including 29 “Sport” variants. Despite financial losses per unit, Porsche viewed the 959 as a pivotal investment, as its technology would later influence the evolution of the standard 911.
This exceptional 959, finished in Graphite Metallic with a Dark Grey multi-tone leather interior, exemplifies Porsche’s groundbreaking supercar. This 959 stayed for many years in the United Kingdom under the ownership of renowned ex-Jaguar and Ferrari Formula 1 driver Eddie Irvine.
Today, this example is presented in excellent condition courtesy of recent refurbishment by Porsche’s Classic Restoration department which included an extensive restoration work totaling nearly 250,000 Euros. With specialized care essential for the 959, Porsche’s own experts handled every aspect, including paintwork, engine, drivetrain, suspension, and interior, along with 25,000 Euros worth of upgrades.
It’s also worth noting that this 959 has been driven with purpose as evident of its modest 39,700 kilometers (approx. 24,600 miles). It also comes with some luxurious features such as signature multi-tone leather seats, gray carpeting, and an upgraded Sport three-spoke steering wheel.
Revered as an icon of automotive excellence, the 959 remains among the most legendary supercars of the 1980s alongside its legendary rival, the Ferrari F40. This 959 presents an exciting opportunity for collectors to acquire one of Porsche’s best supercars with incredible provenance.
