1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweight for Sale

One of only 200 examples built in the factory Lightweight specification

This 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweight is a rare and highly sought-after model, with only 200 units produced in the M471 Lightweight configuration. This particular example, set to be auctioned by Mecum Auctions in Glendale, California, on March 22nd, has an odometer reading of just 15,930 kilometers (9,874 miles).

Designed for homologation purposes, the Carrera RS 2.7 was developed following the FIA regulation changes that ended the dominance of the Porsche 917. Based on the 2.4L 911S, Porsche engineers optimized the RS for performance by reducing weight. This was achieved through the use of thinner-gauge steel for the body panels, lightweight fiberglass bumpers, thinner glass, and racing-style seats. The model also introduced the now-iconic “Burzel” ducktail rear spoiler, which significantly improved aerodynamic stability at high speeds.

The car is powered by the Type 911/83 air-cooled 2,687cc flat-six engine, delivering 210 horsepower through Bosch mechanical fuel injection. The power is transmitted via a Type 915 five-speed manual transmission. The drivetrain is complemented by ventilated four-wheel disc brakes, independent front suspension with MacPherson struts, and a rear torsion-bar suspension, ensuring precise handling.

Originally delivered in Italy, this particular Carrera RS 2.7 later resided in Switzerland before making its way to the United States. The vehicle is finished in a striking Tangerine exterior with a black interior, staying true to its lightweight racing pedigree. Notable details include lightweight door panels, bucket seats, an aluminum engine cover, and silver Fuchs wheels.
